What is the difference between dreams, and reality? Both hold meaning, and this meaning is made stronger by sharing. We make of our world, our paths, and our selves through narrative: the stories we share, and the stories we write for ourselves. Born out of the close connection forged through an evening of reading aloud and being read to at our home, Storytime brings the power and the intimacy of storytelling to the playa.
We seek to create delight, by morphing a dignified object—the banker's lamp—into something larger-than-life, a warmly inviting glow in the desert night. We seek to entertain and inform, by providing a platform and venue for personal storytelling, play-acting, poetry and book readings, and teaching. And we seek to build community through shared experience and understanding.
By providing transport to all throughout the burn, we will share stories with every rider. Because the act of storytelling is so universal, anyone can be a participant. Our on-board library of interesting books and plays provide a rich resource for those who want to read to others. When we settle in for a serious story session, we roll out a comfy rug on the playa, laden with cushions and pillows and illuminated by our gorgeous lamp. Stopped at a city plaza, or parked at the Black Rock Public Library, we offer a new stage for learning from each other. Late at night, amid the rolling sub-bass and hectic parties of deep playa, Storytime will offer an oasis of calm, a community of new friends, and a new way to see in the playa sunrise.
Our crew will operate the car through the day and night, providing and inspiring a range of experiences based on storytelling, on playa and within the city. We will have scheduled events, including storytelling by our operators, radio shows, and educational discussions. The rest of the time we will ply the playa, setting up where seems appropriate and letting the magic of storytelling unfold.
